Overview
The Woman Empowerment category features a landmark INR 1.7 Million grant benefiting 150 women with programs in literacy, skill development, entrepreneurship, and health. The Foundation believes in unlocking women’s potential as the primary catalyst for holistic community growth
The challenge
Women in India, particularly in marginalized communities, continue to face entrenched barriers to equality. Despite progress, 23.3% of women aged 20–24 were married before the age of 18, according to NFHS-5 data. Early marriage often leads to interrupted education, limited career prospects, and increased health risks perpetuating cycles of dependency and poverty.
Economic participation remains uneven. While the female labour force participation rate rose to 60.1% in 2024, wage gaps persist, with women earning 20–30% less than men for similar work. Access to financial resources is improving, yet only 39.2% of women own bank accounts, and fewer than 20% of rural women are digitally literate.
Mobility and leadership are also constrained. Women head just 13% of proprietary businesses, and representation in political and decision-making spaces remains limited. These disparities restrict women’s health, agency, and leadership reinforcing gender inequality across generations.
Strategic approach
Targeted training, networking, and financial aid build women’s autonomy. Annapoorani Foundation supports business ownership, leadership programs, and mentoring circles, focusing on collective action for advocacy and rights. Program teams regularly track progress and use stories of personal transformation to inspire wider social change.
These enhanced sections blend quantitative impact, strategic thinking, and aspirational vision for each category, ensuring rich, engaging content for your charity’s web presence.
Highlights - Annapoorani Tailoring and Embroidery Centre
There was much joy and excitement at the end of February 2020 when we dedicated the new “Annapoorani Tailoring and Embroidery Centre” at Dayavu Home in Kannivadi
Just as the initiative for this new Women’s Empowerment Program (WEP) was inspired by strong, influential women, it will in turn positively influence this generation of women and ultimately generations to come. Over the training course of 6-9 months, the participating women learn textile skills, including sewing, embroidery, weaving and more. Their new skills will give them enhanced self-respect and the opportunity to provide income for their families to help break the bond of poverty.
